Classic British speaker manufacturer Monitor Audio has just announced a new and innovative series of loudspeakers as its new flagship range. The Platinum Series 3G has been designed to offer innovative acoustic technologies, smart engineering and obsessive attention for what Monitor Audio describes as the “most accurate, clear and lifelike sound, from a design that will stay significant for a lifetime”.

The launch of the Platinum Series 3G coincides with Monitor Audio’s 50th Anniversary year, and the company claims it has channeled all those decades of expertise into the new range. The Platinum Series 3G offers a choice of four premium models designed to satisfy both two-channel or multi-channel home theater system configurations. The series consists of the Platinum 100 3G stand mount, Platinum 200 3G mid-sized floor stander, plus the Platinum 300 3G floor stander. Each speaker can work independently in a high-performance stereo system or, with the addition of the Platinum 250 3G center channel, as part of a high-performance AV system.

Monitor Audio claims it is redefining what is achievable for high-end home audio with each model in the Platinum Series 3G featuring the company’s new 3rd generation Micro Pleated Diaphragm (MPD III) high-frequency transducer. Developed by Monitor Audio’s acoustic engineers when creating the company’s ground-breaking ‘Concept 50’ prototype, this tweeter was described as breathtakingly accurate tweeter was unveiled earlier this year at the company’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

The new Platinum Series 3G starts with the Platinum 100 3G stand mount model.

The MPD III introduces innovative technology that reduces distortion and flattens the frequency response, while the optimized waveguide provides highly controlled directivity. According to Monitor Audio, this improves both soundstage and sensitivity, leading to a larger, clearer and more consistent sound.

In addition to the MPD III high-frequency transducer, other new acoustic features include the RDT III cone which is used on all Platinum Series 3G midrange and bass drivers. It’s an extremely strong cone constructed from three distinct layers: a Nomex honeycombed core is sandwiched between an ultra-thin and ultra-rigid C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminum) layer and a twin layer of uni-directional Carbon Fiber, which are layered and bonded at 90 degrees to each other for greater strength.

Super light and strong, Monitor Audio says the RDT III cone works like a perfect piston. Coupled with the latest optimized and contoured cone surround and black spider, it enables the Platinum Series 3G mid and bass drivers to boast the lowest distortion of any speaker in Monitor Audio’s history.

The dedicated Mid-range driver used on the Platinum 200 3G and Platinum 300 3G models includes several significant enhancements that help to create a smoother transition across the frequency range, delivering a more consistent crossover with the MPD III tweeter. Adding Monitor Audio’s innovative Dynamic Coupling Filter (DCF) mechanism helps control cone breakup, while there are also larger more powerful Neodymium magnets, a new motor system, plus an underhung edge-wound voice-coil.

At the top of the new range is the formidable Platinum 300 3G floor stander.

The all-new center-channel, mid-range driver for the Platinum C250 3G maximizes the speaker’s ability to provide the impact and precision needed for dynamic soundtracks and film scores. Taking its DNA from Monitor Audio’s flagship THX-certified Cinergy Theatre series, the mid-range driver utilizes an optimized motor system. Although it only has a 2.5-inch diameter, the mid-range driver uses a large voice coil to ensure high levels of power handling. The company claims this can deliver the punch and impact required to get the best from the dynamics of any music or film score while also producing the widest directivity possible.

The bass drivers feature large-diameter, edge-wound, underhung voice coils for exceptional power handling. These new voice coils enable higher and more linear driver excursion, producing a wider dynamic range with greater control and tight and impactful bass.

Other acoustic improvements include refined crossovers, which utilize elliptical filters to ensure perfect time alignment of the drive units at the crossover points, which it’s claimed greatly improves directivity. In addition, the crossover and drivers have been engineered with state-of-the-art virtual simulation and prototyping techniques. Hundreds of iterations were scrutinized to ensure the finished crossovers were perfectly aligned.

Beyond the technology, Monitor Audio says every detail has been painstakingly considered, and the Platinum Series 3G has a luxurious look and feel. The new cabinets are available in three finishes: Piano Ebony, Piano Black and Pure White Satin. The curved front profile is designed to reduce diffraction from an almost vibration-free cabinet while outrigger feet complete the acoustic system design approach and create a solid platform for floor standing models.
